Mahjong Solitaire is easy to start: you match pairs of identical tiles and remove them until the board is empty. No prior experience needed. This guide walks you through your first steps and points you to how to play, Mahjong Solitaire rules, and tile types so you can play with confidence.
Your First Game
When the board appears, look for tiles that have nothing on top of them and at least one long side open (left or right). Those are "free." Find two free tiles that look the same—same suit and rank, or same honor type. Click one, then the other; if they match, they disappear. Repeat. You win when the board is clear; you get stuck when no free matching pair remains. For the exact rules, see our rules guide.
Simple Tips for New Players
- Remove tiles that sit on top of others first—that opens more options.
- If several pairs are free, prefer the one that uncovers new tiles.
- Use reshuffle (if your game has it) when stuck—it is there to help.
- Take your time; there is no timer in most versions.

Keep Playing
The more you play, the faster you will spot free tiles and matching pairs. You do not need to memorize every tile type at first; matching by shape and color is enough. As you get comfortable, you can learn terminology and tile matching in more detail. Enjoy the game at your own pace—that is what Mahjong Solitaire is for.
